This is Van's way to make things go slower: lower top speed, lower stall speed, and slower building progress!

The spar is extended by maybe 12cm, so it gives abour 2-3% more span.

These rivets had to be riveted with gun and bucking bar. I still have respect for riverting 1/8" rivets, but I have certainly learnt riveting a little bit during the construction of the Empennage. I felt very satisfied with the result.
The second task on the spar is to drill stiffeners - the blue things on the picture. You get absolutely no idea why, because they are not mentioned in this chapter any more. They are used in a later chapter, and then they are already drilled.

The beautiful golden color comes from anodizing. Van's does this for maximum corossion protection.

The simplest way to get the required 1/16" offset fot the drilling is to use the rivet template!
Most of the prepairing work is to countersink the holes in the spar flanges. There are two spars and two flanges per spar and an awful lot of holes on on every flange. I have never run my drill that hot!
